Between Friday the 26th February and Monday the 7th March Mike Sharp is 'on the March'.
As a celebration of his 70th year of his birth Mike and his long standing Friend Alan are planning to climb the Worlds highest free-standing mountain and Africa's highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. At 5,895m or 19,341ft it will be a tall order but Mike and Alan are feeling confident. Alan lived in that part of Africa in his youth and is familiar with the mountain and indeed did climb it with his son about 10 years ago.
To make the trip really special Mike has decided to use the challenge to raise some financial support for two charities close to his heart.
One of which is of course the Surrey 2019 Festival. As an active member of Regis Aurigae Lodge No. 9264 in the Province of Surrey Mike knows how important this charity is and is keen to support the 2 great Masonic Homes that we have in Surrey, Shannon Court and James Terry Court.
The other charity Mike is raising funds for is The Grange Centre in Great Bookham, Surrey. Established in 1927 the Grange is a truly amazing and unique facility which provides people with disabilities vocational training and also now offers accommodation for over 80 residents and 30 or more day visitors.
The vocational opportunities on offer include catering, creative arts and textiles, horticulture, IT, bee keeping, woodwork and work experience, through which several of the team came to learn about putting together a radio programe at a community radio station where Mike was working as a trainee presenter!!! One team member 'DJ Tom' is now on air every week. If you would like to listen to Surrey Hills Radio click here or visit www.surreyhillsradio.co.uk
Currently the Grange is undertaking a major 'Lifting Experience' development estimated to cost £621,000 which will significantly increase their capacity by adapting the roof void, improving access with a lift and remodeling other areas so as to accommodate a further 25 residents.
Mike's intention is that all money raised shall be shared equally between the two charities. Gift aid will be recovered where possible. Please support Mike and Alan in their challenge to climb Kilimanjaro.
